I am Encouraged

I am going to vote today. I am 43 years old and I have cast my ballot in six presidential elections. I had a young family during the Clinton 8 years. I witnessed the courage of Bush’s 8 years. I am struggling to get through the terrible tragedy of Obama’s 8 years. I have seen 3 different presidents sense the time I was able to vote. I am a history guy and just looking back over our recent history a lot can be said about our prosperity immediately following the 12 years of Reagan/Bush. I am writing this morning because whatever little influence I may have I want to use it to encourage people to go and vote because this election will change the dynamics of our country for at least 2 generations. But I am also writing this morning because I found some great encouragement this morning in the pages of Matthew’s Gospel.

Jesus in his great Sermon on the Mount said some mind blowing things. His beatitudes still garner great acclaim even to the nonbelieving world. His words have echoed out over two millennia and are still encouraging us today. I am going to cast my vote today and I am encouraged by the words of Jesus. Yes I am going to vote for a person I don’t necessarily like but the other alternative is pure insanity. Yes I am praying deeply for the outcome to turn out favorable but I am perfectly aware it is a long-shot. Yes I believe our country is on a great precipice and depending on these election results we may fall and never regain our standing. But I am encouraged this morning because I know that no matter what happens on the evening of November 8, 2016; I know that my King reigns forever!

Jesus was speaking to his listeners telling them how great his Father in heaven is. He was really turning their world upside down with this new Kingdom theology. He said the craziest things and in this particular teaching he was telling them to “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:45) Now this is amazing stuff and Jesus continues with our great encouragement today! Jesus said “For he (God) makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matt. 5:45) I am encouraged this morning because Jesus said God is going to be in control no matter who wins. God raises them up and tears them down according to his own divine prerogative. I am encouraged this morning because God “sends rain on the just and on the unjust!” No one escapes the divine providence of God!

So I am encouraged today as I go and cast my vote because I know my God reigns! I am going to pray that God would indeed, right now, presently, miraculously, and emphatically rain down his justice upon that candidate who has no business being the president of United States of America. I pray that God would intervene in this election cycle and raise up the leader that will secure our nation’s future. I pray because Jesus said to pray. I am comforted because Jesus also said in Matthew chapter 6:34 “do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

When it is all said and done, I am still going to praise my God who is in Heaven! When it is all said and done, I am still going to boldly proclaim his Gospel so that lost sinners may be saved. When it is all said and done, I am still going to advance his kingdom until the day I die or when he snatches me up upon his return. When it is all said and done, I am going to continue to love my family, pray for my country, seek his kingdom, and “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb. 12:1-2)

Go vote! Pray! And praise God anyways!
