Gospel Life 06

Good morning Church,

 

I hope everyone is well rested this morning with that extra hour of sleep. I am so fired up about preaching this morning. I have spent more time on this sermon than I have any other sermon so far in this #GospelLife sermon series. Not because the other sermons haven’t been bold, impactful, and encouraging; but that this morning the Word of God is speaking about a new identity – A Gospel Identity!

 

I think that the problems with our country today is a direct result of Christians (like the Galatian believers) and unbelievers have either lost their identity or they need to a new identity. Without having read through Galatians chapter three you may be a little confused at this point. So let me start with something that is extremely relevant in our country’s discourse today. America was built upon Judeo-Christian values and has become the greatest nation on earth due to its founding identity. Just read the beginning words of the very first founding document. I am not going to give a history lesson this morning but listen to what our founders proclaimed as they signed their names to this first declaration – “… the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them,… We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights… appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.” Now it is very clear that these founders understood that their national identity is subservient to “nature’s God,” “Creator,” and “Supreme Judge” who’s will is first and foremost on their minds. Our nation began as a Christian nation and our identity was firmly set within Christ.

 

That is no longer our identity as a nation because it is no longer our identity as a people. Individually we have lost our way. Individually we have lost our identity. We are no longer concerned about what “nature’s God” will say when we decide to elect a president that defends the legal right to murder unborn children. We are no longer worried about what our “Creator” will say when our hatred against our fellow citizens rage out of control against each other knowing that he created us in is very own image making every life a unique, glorious, and wonderful creation of God. No matter our race, creed, religion, or socioeconomic status we were all created in the same image of God. We are no longer concerned about the “Supreme Judge” and his judgment upon our nation because we have standing before us two presidential candidates that have no business leading our country. We have lost our identity!

 

Yet we still must make a choice. We still must decide. Not just who will be our next president… albeit a very important decision even though you do not like either candidate. We must decide as a nation what our identity is! Is our identity in a new president or is our identity in the king of the universe Jesus Christ? Is our identity in our jobs, our pride, our spouse, our children, or our lifestyles? Is our identity wrapped up in in our race? Come on church! Skin color is merely a biological result of geographical environment. Every human being was created in God’s image. We all have the same skin… it is all the same color 1.5mm deep.

 

I am writing these words this morning because I am preaching on the Gospel Identity! The apostle Paul was overwhelmed about how quickly these Galatian believers had abandoned their faith. Just was we have abandoned our faith! He was desperate to explain to them that their identity cannot be found in the law but in Jesus! This morning we are going to be looking at our Gospel Identity because our #GospelLife proclaims our true identity! We are children of God and our identity is in Christ! It is time to reclaim our lives, our families, our churches, our communities, and our nation with the Gospel Identity of Jesus Christ!
