First Day of the Rest of your Life

Good Morning Church and Happy New Year!

Today is the first day of the rest of your life! Have you ever really thought about what that saying means? This morning as we look forward to a New Year in 2017 we can think about so many different things. Like countless others, we will spend some time reflecting on what 2016 was all about and then we will look forward to 2017 wondering what the New Year will bring.

Many of us will come to church this morning with a list of resolutions. A list of things that are going to be different in this New Year. Lose weight, eat healthy, exercise more, save money, and countless other things could be listed. Most of the time, if we are being honest, these things will only be important to us for about 14 days and then our habits will take over and the list will begin to get smaller and smaller and before the month of January is up we will no longer have list and be resigned to 2018 for change.

I want you to take 2017’s resolutions and think with me a moment perhaps from a different perspective. I want you to look at this New Year and today as it truly being the first day of the rest of your life! What is it that you can do today that is different from yesterday? What is it that can keep you looking forward casting off those things that hinder you? What troubles you this morning to such an extent that it has produced an overwhelming sorrow? Jesus shows us the way in the most human of ways!

This morning I am going to preach a “New Year’s Sermon.” But it is not something you would normally expect. I want us to look at the humanity of Christ and understand what it means today is the first day of the rest of your life! Jesus faces imminent betrayal and death and he is overcome with trouble and sorrow. Yet instead of turning to his flesh he turned to his Father. In that moment Jesus was given purpose and peace. That was the first day of the rest of his life! Today can be the first day of the rest of your life!

We would love for you to join us this morning. Come and enjoy worship with us!
