Gospel Family 02

Good Morning church

This morning I continue a series of three messages called the Gospel Family. Last week we looked at Gospel Children and this morning we are going to examine Eph. 5-6 and look at Gospel Dads/Husbands. It was a difficult sermon to write because it forced me to look at my own life and how I have measured up as a Gospel Husband/Father.

Looking back over the last 25 years I have seen some regrets. More times than not I provoked my children to anger. More times than not I disciplined them in an unbalanced way promoting anger and rebellion instead of correction and love. These are regrets that any parent would have. There is no such thing as the perfect parent and when you began parenting just barely an adult like I did, then you will have an even greater struggles. My sons are grown now and they have their own wives and children. As I look into their families I often wonder if I had done enough? I wonder if there was something I could have done different so that their marriages and families would be better? The answer is “of course there is.”

What I am getting at church is that we all make mistakes in our parenting and being spouses. But I want you to know that there is hope. Lots of people want to tell you that there is no really right way in doing this thing we call family. I adamantly reject that statement! Why? Because God has given us his Word where he has very specifically and purposefully outlined for us what that Gospel Family looks like. He has shown us very clearly that Dads should not provoke their children to anger; that they should discipline their children in love; and that they should give them the knowledge it takes to grow and become godly men and women. Scripture clearly defines the roles between husband and wife. Husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Through this kind of love their wives are sanctified so that they can be presented without blemish.

This is the pattern for us to follow. We can know it. We can practice it. We can be good at it! My question this morning men—Will you examine the blueprint and endeavor to build your own Gospel Family?

If you are interested in understanding a little more deeply then I encourage you to come and be with us this morning at Joy Baptist Church.
