Good Morning Church,
I am sitting here this morning praying that God would give me some encouraging words about the sermon this morning. I have been really struggling with it over the last 30 minutes. I am preaching the 2nd message in our GOSPEL series on the letter “O.” Last week it is on the first letter and we examined God’s Character of Holiness! It was a great sermon really exalting the holy nature of God. It really begins to build the momentum of this series as we learn about these Gospel essentials.
So this morning the message is on the “O”—The Offense Sin. So I am thinking how in the world can I say anything that would be encouraging this morning about “Sin” that would motivate you to not miss church? I mean come on? If we are being honest right? How many of us want to go to church and hear a message about sin? Is this why we come to church for a preacher to stand behind the pulpit and slam down his fist and proclaim how we are all sinners and our lives are never going to measure up? No one wants to listen to any of that! Yet, I am overwhelmed by conviction this morning that this is indeed what everyone needs to hear this morning!
If we understand correctly the Holy nature of God, then we must grasp the eternal consequence of our sin against a Holy God! Our sin is the problem! Our sin is the issue! We live in a world today where everyone is so afraid of offending anyone else that NO ONE is calling out sin any more. Not even in our churches. People may call themselves “going to church” when they fill the buildings of so called churches that have preachers with big smiles and wonderful uplifting praise and worship and the problem of sin is never addressed! In my humble opinion there can be no greater atrocity committed by a preacher than to stand behind the pulpit and not preach on the Offense of Sin! Our Sin has offended the Holy nature of God and because of his Just nature our sin must be punished and his wrath upon us has eternal consequences.
So how can I encourage you to come to church this morning and hear about a sermon on Sin? JESUS! Yes our sin offends and it will do at least three things—Separate, Slay, and Supplant! It will bring upon the wrath of God and without God intervening there would be no hope! “BUT GOD!” Praise God! I believe those are the two greatest words in all of the Bible!
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us…
Why don’t you join us this morning and hear the greatest message ever told—The GOSPEL of Jesus Christ where our Sin is confronted by the greatest act of Love ever committed!
