Why you Should Give to your Church
Why Should you give to your Church?
As a pastor of a small country church, I sometimes get folks mad at me when I talk about giving. However, I believe our folks need to understand God uses us to advance his kingdom right here at Joy Baptist Church through your faithful and generous giving.
Now I want you to ponder this for just a few moments. Lets just start with the basics. Electric, Water, Trash, Phone, internet, van, and building maintenance are always relevant. We have these basic elements because over 125 years ago a few Christians came together and constituted our local body of believers into a formal Southern Baptist Church. They called a pastor and they begin serving the community for the advancement of the Gospel. Therefore, these basic elements must be met at a minimum for us to carry on that original charge. None of this happens without your faithful and sacrificial giving.
Let’s move on to the next tier if you will. Your giving has provided us the opportunity for two full-time staff -Senior pastor and one associate pastor. You have charged us to be diligent in our work and study so that we can fulfill our biblical mandate to equip you with the tools to advance the gospel and build up the church. Your giving not only impacts those two fulltime pastors individually, but you impact their entire families. Because of your giving these two men can provide for their families. This is a huge undertaking. But you have considered it a worthy investment for the glory of our God and Father.
OK, now we can move on to some other work of the church. Ministries such as JBC Connects and Children’s ministry, Students, Men’s, Ladies, Evangelism, Discipleship, Fellowship, Buildings, and Outreach… all of these ministries cannot operate and become ineffective without your faithful and sacrificial giving. The work of the church can only move forward with any sort of impact as long as you continue to keep giving as a top priority on your life.
These are all important reasons to give. But none of them are the most important reason to give. You should give because God commands you to do it. It is really pretty simple when you think about it. Jesus was pretty clear about who you love and what you should do about it right? Jesus said “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) If you love Jesus you will make giving to his Church the most important thing you do with your money.
Jesus wants you to see that your heart is what matters. All those reasons you should give to the church that I mentioned are only possible if your heart is where it is supposed to be. Jesus said “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matt. 6:19-21)
Ask yourself this—Are you being obedient with your giving? Where do you spend most of your money? When you set your budget, is your tithe a part of it? In your budget what priority do you place your tithe? Is your tithe the first thing that goes when you need to spend money on something else? Where is your heart?
Church, I know without a doubt that when you get this concept of giving right, God will do crazy and amazing things in your life! God proclaims in Malachi 3, when you give (Don’t forget it belongs to God already) Look at what God says “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” (Mal. 3:10)
God has some really great things in store for us here at Joy Baptist Church. Anyone that has been coming over the last year can really see that God is on the move here. Will you be blessed and follow him in his movement? Will you make giving a priority in your Christian life? Take this 90 Day Challenge – For the next 90 days, be obedient to the point of sacrifice with your tithes and offerings and see if God doesn’t work some sort of glorious blessing in your life. After the end of that 90 day period and you find that God hasn’t lived up to his promises then stop giving and carry on with whatever you were doing before. I am telling you that God doesn’t ever break a promise. Just like he said in Malachi, the only place in the Bible where God says to “test” him, he will “open up the windows of heaven and our down for you blessing until these is no more need.”
Will you take the 90 Day Giving Challenge? You will not be disappointed! We would love to hear about your giving journey along the way. If you would like to share with us what God is doing then email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
