Good Morning Church?
I am so excited to preach this morning. We continue our series on being Transformed as we look through the Book of Romans. So far, we have seen the Gospel is our Identity and how the Gospel is Famous. This morning we are going to look at what is the most popular verse in Romans 1—verse 16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
Now this verse comes on the heels of verse 15 where Paul is explaining how excited he is to be able to come preach the Gospel in Rome. He follows it with this “for” statement. What you will see in the next couple of chapters are a series of these “gar” (Greek “for”) statements. This word is used to build upon the statement previously made. They continue to build upon one another as the author makes his point. Paul says, “So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome,” and then follows it up with this first “for” phrase in which he will build his theological philosophy of salvation over the next several chapters.
This morning we examine the foundation of Paul’s soteriology (fancy word for “study of salvation). So, it is very important that we really understand this first statement. “I AM NOT ASHAMED!” Paul is not ashamed of the Gospel because the Gospel is right! We must know what is right and live our lives accordingly. By the way, only humans can process this concept of “rightness.” Have you ever just really thought about that? How can the pagan/atheist/non-believer explain the human capacity to understand and do what is right? Well it is simple really. It is the fingerprint of God on all of humanity. It is one of the many things that separate humanity from the rest of creation because of the Imago Dei. We were created in the Image of God and therefore we will seek out rightness.
But the only way can know what is right is to have a standard by which to measure rightness. This is what the Apostle Paul is unashamed of—The Gospel of Jesus Christ! Why? Because “it is the Power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”
